An IDC data analysis predicted that global video game revenue was expected to surge 20% to $179.7 billion in 2020. At that level, the video game industry will draw more revenue than the global movie ($100 billion) and North American sports industries ($75 billion) combined. The overall size of the global video game industry is expected to continue its growth trajectory well into the future.

In the United States, according to IBISWorld research, some 261,906 people work in the video game industry in 2020, with the number of employees growing at almost 5% each year for the previous five years. Clearly, IT professionals seeking fresh employment in 2021 should consider the video game industry a prime market for their services.

As is true with any industry of such a large size, the landscape of available positions is vast, varied, and somewhat chaotic. Therefore, before you start searching for positions in the video game industry, it would be beneficial to study the lay of the land and formulate a plan of action.
