Pizza Hut is adding a new pie to its menus across the country. On Tuesday, the fast-food chain announced that all-new Detroit-Style pizza is now available nationwide.

According to a press release, the new addition was born out of the growing popularity of this pizza style across the country, as well as plenty of requests from customers. With that in mind, Pizza Hut spent over a year developing and perfecting its Detroit-Style pizza and tried more than 500 variations of the new pie. Several contenders were even tested in the Midwest, where this distinct style was born.

“True to the traditional Detroit style, each pizza is rectangular-shaped, features cheese all the way to the edges to create that crispy, thick, caramelized crust, is loaded with toppings and finished off with a vine-ripened tomato sauce on top to keep the crust light and airy,” the press release states. “To make this new menu item truly unique, Pizza Hut incorporated its own take on a few elements — such as the new, vine-ripened tomato sauce that's only available on Detroit-Style — which it tested eight different versions of before finding the perfect taste.”

And Pizza Hut didn’t stop there. The company has created four new Detroit-style recipes to choose from and each of them are packed with toppings and cheese that can only be supported by that thick, rectangular signature Detroit-Style crust. For example, the Double Cheesy is layered with two kinds of cheese, including aged Parmesan, while the Meaty Deluxe is loaded with bacon, Italian sausage and crispy cupped pepperoni. A third Detroit-style pizza, the Supremo, is topped with Italian sausage, red onions and green bell peppers.

However, Pizza Hut’s piece de résistance is a pie called the Detroit Double Pepperoni, which has been dubbed “a work of pizza art.” It's topped with 32 slices of regular pepperoni and another 48 slices of crispy cupped pepperoni, which crisp up in the oven and provide a crunchy texture and zesty flavor. For those of you keeping track, that's a whopping 80 slices of pepperoni on one pizza. Prices for all four pizzas start at $10.99.

Pizza Hut is billing this new range of offerings as its “biggest launch of the year,” and for some fans of the chain, it makes perfect sense. “Whenever anyone asks me what Detroit-style pizza is like, I always compare it to Pizza Hut’s Pan Pizza. Both have a buttery, soft crust and salty, melty cheese with sweeter sauce,” says Food Network senior editor T.K. Brady. “As far as chain pizza restaurants go, to me, Pizza Hut seems like the no-brainer brand for a Detroit-style offering. Although, it’s no replacement for supporting local spots whenever you can.”

Pizza Hut fans can rest assured knowing this latest creation was well worth the wait. “Countless hours were spent testing and perfecting every detail here to create our take on Detroit-Style pizza,” David Graves, chief brand officer, Pizza Hut, said in a statement. “The caramelized cheese crust and the sauce on top take the taste of this pizza to the next level.”

As Pizza Hut aficionados may know, this is hardly the first time the popular chain has crafted some of America's favorite pizzas. The Original Pan Pizza debuted in 1980 and Pizza Hut’s Original Stuffed Crust Pizza came out 15 years later.
