Ingredients

Directions

  1. Grease a 9 x 13 x 2-inch oval baking dish with the butter and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, 1/3 cup of granulated sugar, the brown sugar, vanilla, orange zest, and salt.
  2. Spread half of the diced bread in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle on the raspberries in one layer. Top with the rest of the bread and pour on the egg mixture, pressing down lightly to moisten the bread. Sprinkle with the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the baking dish on a sheet pan and bake it for 60 to 70 minutes, until the custard is set and the top is puffed and browned. Check after 45 minutes; if the top is getting too browned, cover it lightly with aluminum foil. Cool for 10 minutes, sprinkle with confectioners' sugar, dust with extra orange zest, and serve warm with maple syrup.

Delicious! I served it with lemon curd made from our lemon tree for an extra special Easter breakfast treat. The kids loved it!

1 large loaf should do it

Love this recipe. Any suggestions if this can be baked, cooled, then frozen for future use?

Excellent, not too eggy, not dry, perfect texture. The sprinkle of sugar before baking gives a nice crunch.

This was quite good. I didn't make any substitutions or leave anything out. The pan was sitting in the refrigerator for 14 hours; it came out soft, moist and so much flavor! I do have the same pan as Ina, from Pillivuyt.

Brioche would be great, it’s also an egg bread.

Made this today & what a taste sensation. Made a half serve, but otherwise did not deviate from recipe. Used Aldi brioche loaf & fresh raspberries. Thank you Ina & I highly recommend this as a breakfast or dessert dish.

Yo!!!! This was THE BEST french toast situation I've ever had. Household agrees. And I messed up the recipe. Intended on cutting recipe in half, but forgot my intention after adding 5 eggs. So all other ingredients were added as listed. I also added more sugar (in & on) than recipe indicated & added cinnamon. I then left in oven 80 mins instead of 60-70. Despite all that, that thang was thanging. Even the leftovers. I ate it with whip cream. Can't wait to remake as directed. Thanks, Ina. You're the best
